Curator's Notes

I bought the AKAI 1710W because I wanted to add a reel-to-reel recorder to my vintage audio collection. I had used a reel-to-reel machine in my younger years, so there was something immediately familiar about returning to one. Nobody ever formally showed me how to operate these machines, but once you stop and think about the controls, they are reasonably clear.

Reel-to-reel recorders are particularly appealing to people who enjoy the technical side of audio. You do not simply press play and walk away. You thread the tape through the transport, guide it across the heads and rollers, and remain conscious of the mechanics whenever you move between fast forward, stop and play. There is a physical process involved, and the machine expects a little respect.

The 1710W is generally regarded as an entry-level recorder, but I genuinely enjoy its sound. It may not meet the strictest technical definition of high fidelity, yet it is very pleasurable to listen to. Analogue recording can be wonderfully forgiving, and the character of the machine often matters more than a perfect specification sheet.

These recorders were also built like tanks. My unit is probably around fifty years old, yet it still works both electrically and mechanically. It is not perfect: one channel is noticeably louder than the other. I suspect that a proper service and recalibration would correct the imbalance.
