Miniso Marvel Cutlery Set (2019): Thor in My Backpack
Introduction
I purchased this Miniso Marvel cutlery set in August 2019. I found Miniso while walking through a Sydney shopping centre. The store was filled with small goods and branded lines. The place was entertaining. I was in the mood to discover something useful.
I wanted a portable cutlery set for my backpack. I wanted it to be light. I wanted it to feel like decent quality. I also wanted it to be fun. This Thor themed set suited that brief. It felt like a small everyday upgrade.

Curatorโs Notes
I discovered Miniso while wandering through a Sydney shopping centre in 2019. It felt like a shop full of things. It had branded lines. I wanted a portable cutlery set for my backpack. I wanted something light and fun. Miniso delivered. I never really got into the Marvel universe. The big excitement is lost on me. This mini Thor is different. He is so cute. He feels like a mini superhero. I imagine him stamping his foot. I hear a mini thump. I hear a pipsqueak voice say, โhear me roar.โ The cutlery felt excellent in the hand. The cloth bag was perfect. I used it for years. The dishwasher stole a piece or two. I scrapped the rest.
Angry Alien™ Review
Angry Alien speaks… I have crossed star systems, watched empires rise and collapse, and catalogued the slow heat death of galaxies. Then I arrive on Earth and observe humans smiling at a tiny picture of a hammer-wielding god on a lunch utensil. This confuses me. You possess the technology to split atoms, yet you decorate eating tools like nursery toys. The metal is adequate. The design functions. This is acceptable. But why must the god be cute? Gods should inspire fear, not assist with salad. Humans call this โjoy.โ I call it misplaced ambition. Still, I note that the object is used, then worn out, then discarded. At least it served a purpose. Many humans do not.

Glossary
- Miniso
- Miniso is a global lifestyle retailer that blends Japanese-inspired design with mass-market accessibility. Its stores focus on affordable household goods, stationery, travel items, and licensed collaborations. In the late 2010s, Miniso became known for pairing restrained aesthetics with popular franchises. This approach positioned branded objects as everyday items rather than novelty collectibles.
- Licensed merchandise
- Licensed merchandise refers to products that legally use characters, logos, or intellectual property owned by another brand. These items are produced under agreement rather than created independently. In practice, licensed merchandise can range from disposable novelty items to well-designed everyday objects. Its quality depends less on the license and more on how thoughtfully the product is designed and used.
- Stainless steel (420 and 430)
- Stainless steel grades such as 420 and 430 describe different material compositions with distinct properties. Grade 430 is commonly used for utensils due to its corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. Grade 420 is harder and better suited to blades where edge retention matters. Including both grades in one set reflects practical design rather than decorative intent.
- Everyday carry
- Everyday carry describes objects intended to be carried routinely in a bag, pocket, or backpack. These items prioritise portability, durability, and repeated use. Everyday carry objects often fade into daily habits while quietly improving small moments. Their value emerges over time rather than at the point of purchase.
